Welcome to the OntologySummit2011: Panel Session-1 "Applications and Case Studies - I" - Thu 2011-01-27 Summit Theme: OntologySummit2011: "Making the Case for Ontology" Session Title: Harvesting the Business Value of Ontologies: Recent Case Examples Session Co-chairs: Mr. MillsDavis (Project10X) & Mr. MikeBennett (Hypercube, EDM Council) Please refer to details on the session page at: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2011_01_27 In particular, speaker slides can be found under: http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2011_01_27#nid2M2V . anonymous morphed into TerryGriffin anonymous morphed into AshutoshPrasad anonymous morphed into AldenDima anonymous1 morphed into KathyEllis anonymous morphed into JieZheng anonymous1 morphed into ChuckRehberg anonymous morphed into RandyClegg anonymous morphed into BrianHaugh anonymous1 morphed into SusanBritton anonymous morphed into MarkLinehan anonymous morphed into MattHettinger PeterYim: MillsDavis is speaking ... now on slide#3 YuLin: what's the name of this app (slide #3)? MikeBennett: cambridge semantics, not sure of the app SteveRay: Slide 3 is the Excel spreadsheet plug-in offered by Cambridge Semantics. SteveRay: Anzo Solutions Suite, from Cambridge Semantics, with "Anzo for Excel" which was slide 3. AlStevens: Cambridge Semantics Anzo app is described at: http://www.cambridgesemantics.com/products/anzo_for_excel ArturoSanchez: @MillsDavis: is there publicly available information about implementation details of any of these projects? ArturoSanchez: ArturoSanchez@MillsDavis: do you know of success stories--associated with using ontology-driven approaches--in the healthcare industry? SteveRay: @MillsDavis: Do any of your examples have quantified benefits, i.e. measured in $ or some other number? MikeBennett: hopefully the detailed case studies should reflect that PeterYim: Next up is GregBardwell ... slide [2-Bardwell] anonymous morphed into RamSriram PeterYim: GregBardwell, slide #8 - Case-1 ref. quotemysource.com PeterYim: ChuckRehberg is presenting - goto slide [3A-Rehberg] anonymous morphed into PavithraKenjige NicolaGuarino: I have to rush now, great presentations! Pointers to any public info on project details appreciated. MikeBennett: OK, thanks Nicola PeterYim: @MikeBennett & @MillsDavis - since JeffZhuk has a time constraint, maybe we could consider having Jeff come on in between GregBardwell's two cases (assuming they are quite independent) MikeBennett: yes please PeterYim: @ChuckRehberg & @MillsDavis - ok with you both? please say so if there are other constraints that would trump this PeterYim: @MikeBennett - Chuck probably wouldn't notice this ... maybe Mills is focusing on something else, please jumps in as Chuck finishes up on this "Natural Language" case MikeBennett: ok PeterYim: @JeffZhuk - please standby YefimZhuk: ok PeterYim: next up is Yefim (Jeff) Zhuk - goto slide [4-Zhuk] under http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2011_01_27#nid2M2V ... we'll come back to ChuckRehberg's second case later (after JeffZhuk's presentation, as Jeff has to rush to another meeting) RamSriram: @Chuck: Do you have any metrics comparing your rule engine to Rete-based systems. (See, e'g., Miranker's work at http://www.cs.utexas.edu/~miranker/treator.htm) anonymous morphed into Allen PeterYim: @Everyone who is joining us for the first time and don't have a "namesake page" on our wiki, please populate that page so the rest of the community can get to know you. ... Kindly refer to instructions at this paragraph if you are new to this wiki flavor (http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?WikiHomePage#nidA) ... email me if you have any question. Allen morphed into AllenXiang PeterYim: Thank you, Allen AllenXiang: You are welcome. YuLin: AllenXiang is in our team, we work in biomedical track of applying ontologies. We are from the University of Michigan Medical School. I'll put something into the wiki page linked to my name. I will provide more details relevant to ontologies. PeterYim: @YuLin - thank you YuLin: @Peter, you are welcome. MikeBennett: slide 7 PeterYim: next up is ChuckRehberg on his second case - goto slide [3B-Rehberg] MikeBennett: @MillsDavis @PeterYim I can do my talk at a later date if this helps timing YefimZhuk: Chuck, Peter, Mike, Thank you for moving me up and allowing to speak. I have to leave now. Talk to you later. MikeBennett: Thanks Yefim. PeterYim: Thank you very much, Jeff ... bye RamSriram: @Chuck: How big is your search space? Do you have any examples of ontologies and rules used in the truck configuration system. Do you have any metrics on the systems usage (e.g., how much is this used and how well is this helping the company to compete?). How do you evaluate the ontologies? ChuckRehberg: @Ram: My answers in [] - How big is your search space? [In terms of possible configurations?] - Do you have any examples of ontologies and rules used in the truck configuration system. [Unfortunately cant share this] - Do you have any metrics on the systems usage (e.g., how much is this used and how well is this helping the company to compete?). [100% of all vehicles are configured using this system] - How do you evaluate the ontologies? [based on value (amount of use) in product delivery] BobbinTeegarden: Yes, please do have Mike's presentation now. YuLin: what's the name of this UML tool? PeterYim: @MikeBennett - question above from YuLin was in reference to your slide#5 BrianHaugh: Slide 5 title identifies the UML modeling tool as "Enterprise Architect" MikeBennett: @YuLin - enterprise architect from sparx YuLin: Thanks. BrianHaugh: What is "MBS" on slides 11 and 12? MikeBennett: MBS = mortgage backed security MillsDavis: MBS = mortgage backed securities YuLin: @MikeBennett - Is your data model in OWL? MikeBennett: @YuLin - not in native OWL/RDF yet but folks working on that YuLin: I see. ChuckRehberg: Need to drop off - sorry for leaving early - thanks to all -Chuck ToddSchneider: @MikeBennett - Is Enterprise Architect (EA) working on supporting OWL? MikeBennett: @Todd I don't know. We are however talking to OMG with whom EA is a member, with a view to formalizing a lot of what we've done. JimRhyne: Mike's ontology is developed using Enterprise Architect. Sandpiper Software has been working with Mike to export his ontology as OWL RDF/XML JimRhyne: You can contact me for details. MikeBennett: And when the Sandpiper export is done this will become the canonical OWL version of our ontology. However some features like Archetypes are beyond OWL and will require additional annotation. YuLin: @Mike, you mentioned the Michigan State Univeristy MikeBennett: @YuLin - yes, Michigan State U - BillMcCarthy's REA ontology. We used that as the basis for transactions, including OTC derivatives YuLin: @mike, Thanks. YuLin: It's a great meeting. Gave us a lot of inspirations for our projects. Thanks. See you next week. PeterYim: Fantastic session ... bye everyone ... see you next Thursday! PeterYim: -- session ended; 11:33am PST -- ===============
