[ontolog] organizing team teleconference
07-Aug-2002 15:35 - 16:08
Attendance: Leo Obrst, Kurt Conrad, Peter Yim
Proceedings --
- PPY introduces of Leo and Kurt
- PPY described that he is working on a startup with Eugene Kim called "Blue
Oxen Associates" - a virtual project management business, a community support
infrastructure and a research-thinktank for open knowledge (which we
metaphorically call the dot-com, dot-net, dot-org combo.) Let me be
upfront with this move --
- I am planning to move this forum over to the BlueOxen infrastructure
eventually
- the BlueOxen community runs on a subscription basis (corporate,
sponsored and individual memberships will be available.) I suggest we get
this forum sponsored by some organization, so that members can enjoy the
benefits without having to come up with their membership fees individually.
- Kurt and Leo acknowledged the disclosure
- Ref list of invitees cited in Kurt's 7.11.02 message <http://www.cim3.net/lists/ontolog/0207/msg00001.html>
- PPY proposes adding following invitees: Jack Park; Eugene Kim; Adam
Cheyer; also, key UBL players (at least for courtesy reasons) -- Eve Maler; Arofan Gregory; Mark Crawford; Sally Chan; Gunther Stuhec;
- also: announcement to the UBL list [Kurt to bounce this off Jon first]
- errata: Chris Doyle & Leo Obrst (name spelling)
- need e-mail address for: Tony Loeser
- Suggest that when we send out our invitation -- [discussed and confirmed
the following]
- we also ask the respondent to indicate whether they would want to be
"active members" or "observers";
- we encourage "observers" to participate in the discussion and contribute
as well. However, by choosing to be an "observer", we will not assume that s/he
is going to take on tasks that are on the critical path (until the person
specifically choose to, later)
- we'll try to use OASIS processes as much as we can
- should we ask invitees to also propose other people whom they think
should be on our list too? -Yes. Have them send the names to anyone of the
three of us. We'll then coordinate to get them onto the list.
- suggest we send the invitation out under our 3 names (PPY, LO, KC) as
the conveners of the forum
- Kurt will send out the invitations
- Peter will administer the infrastructure
- A few things that I would like for the three of us to align expectations on,
particularly in regards to (ref. the two line draft mission statement cited in
the above message) -- [discussed and confirmed the following]
- we want to be pragmatic (and not purely philosophical or academic)
- we want to be THE forum (of choice, at least) for that which is listed
on our charter
- we do discuss informal ontologies as well as formal ontology... (PPY: I
don't believe human knowledge is fully describable, but that being said, I
do hope that we can describe a subset of the business ontology fully enough
to allow us to be effectively doing business in a "semantic web" setting.)
-- confirmed.
- we hope to be hosting a repository of ontologies ... some day. Leo: yes.
- we want to be part of future standards, through influencing and getting
incorporated into the UBL effort
- the UN/CEFACT business process input - already asked if Jim Clark from
Microsoft wants to join us. Let's wait and see. Since Monica Martin is on our
list of invitees and she is part of that group, maybe we will eventually get
connected that way.
