Andreas Tolk (39FB)
Andreas Tolk is Professor in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at the Old Dominion University. He holds a joint appointment with the Modeling, Simulation, and Visualization Department. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science (1995) and has M.S. in Computer Science (1988) from the University of the Federal Armed Forces, Germany. Dr. Tolk was Senior Research Scientist at the Virginia Modeling Analysis & Simulation Center (VMASC) from 2002 to 2006. He was Vice President for Land Weapon Systems at the German company IABG, the main contractor for the German Ministry of Defense for operations research and simulation applications for analyses, training, and experimentation, from 1998 to 2002. He was project manager for decision support systems and integration of M&S into Command and Control systems from 1995 to 1998 with the German company ESG, a main contractor for German Command and Control systems. He was an officer in the German Army from 1983 to 1995. Dr. Tolk published more than 200 papers in journals and conferences on simulation systems and Command and Control interoperability and received more than 30 awards for his contributions. He is one of the authors of NATO’s Code of Best Practice for Command and Control Assessment. (39FC)
Andreas Tolk edited books on "Complex Systems in Knowledge-based Environments: Theory, Models and Applications (Studies in Computational Intelligence)" and "Intelligent-Based Systems Engineering (Intelligent Systems Reference Library)" both co-edited with Lakhmi C. Jain. He also edited a textbook on the "Engineering Principles of Combat Modeling and Distributed Simulation." (39FD)
He received the Technical Merit Award of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization in 2010 and the Outstanding Professional Contribution Award of the Society of Modeling and Simulation in 2012. (39FE)
